One of the more common particles seen is suspended sediment or silt. This sediment deposit is created by erosion from many sources, such as wind, water, and humans. Erosion can cause soil erosion which moves sediment in the water and when the water stops, the deposit will settle. The water turbidity measurement indicates the amount of silt suspended in a given volume of water. The measure is usually given as NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Units).
Turbidity, simply put, is water with a lot of stuff in it. It’s a natural property of surface water, and also a helpful measurement in water treatment plants. Turbidity, a measure of how much stuff is in the water, is quantified in Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU).
